Why so much everyday stock comes from Thailand

Why Thai-made personal care, home and wellness products are so common on Singapore shelves, and what that means for retailers buying them in.

By the DANJJAK team3 min read

Walk through a Singapore minimart, pharmacy or beauty counter and a surprising amount of what you see was made in Thailand. The short answer is that Thailand is a large manufacturing base for personal care and household goods in the region, and many of its brands are already familiar to Singapore shoppers from trips north. That combination of supply and recognition makes Thai products a practical choice for retailers.

A regional manufacturing base

Thailand has a well-established manufacturing industry for everyday consumables: soaps, shampoos, skincare, laundry products, balms and drink mixes. Some brands are Thai through and through. Others are developed elsewhere and made in Thailand.

You can see both in our own catalogue. The Hygiene fabric softener lists its country of manufacture as Thailand. KOTA hair colour is described by its seller as "built on Korean cosmetic formula technology and manufactured in Thailand". Mikeo drink sachets also state Thailand as the country of manufacture. When a product's label or listing says where it was made, it is worth noting, because it helps when you are checking that stock is genuine.

Shoppers already know the brands

For many people in Singapore, Thailand is a short and familiar trip. Bangkok convenience stores and pharmacies are part of the holiday routine, and people come home with favourites: an inhaler stick, a tube of acne gel, a box of fibre sachets, a pack of rice milk soap.

That matters to a retailer for a simple reason. A customer who already knows a pack asks for it by name, recognises it on your shelf, and buys it again. You spend less time explaining and less effort on promotion. Brands like Poy Sian, Hiruscar and Donutt fall into this category for a lot of shoppers. We go through more of them in Thai beauty brands Singapore shoppers already know.

Product types that suit a small shop

Thai lines tend to be strong in categories that work well for small Singapore retailers:

  • Pocket and counter items. Herbal inhalers, balms and small gel tubes are light, compact and easy to sell at the till. See Thai herbal inhalers explained.
  • Sachet formats. Drink mixes and hair treatments in single sachets let customers try something without committing to a large pack.
  • Household basics. Fabric softener and other laundry items with a range of scents.
  • Bath and body. Bar soaps, body oils and shower products in recognisable packs.

Many of these are consumables, which means repeat purchases rather than one-off sales.

Variety, and the work it creates

The flip side of a large, busy market is variety. Thai brands often release many variants under one name. Hygiene's softener, for example, is listed in a long run of scents, from Milky Touch to Peony Bloom and Sunrise Kiss. Donutt's drink mixes come in nine flavours across two product lines with different directions.

For a buyer, that means:

  • Be specific when ordering. Brand, line, variant and pack size.
  • Expect packaging to be updated from time to time, and check new stock against what you received before.
  • Read the warnings and directions on each variant, not just the first one you saw.

Our checklist of questions to ask a wholesale supplier is a good place to start.

Labels, languages and regulation

Some Thai products carry Thai-language text on the pack alongside English, and the level of English detail varies. When you stock them, make sure you can tell a customer what the product is and how it is used, using the pack's own wording.

Medicines and cosmetics sold in Singapore are regulated by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). If you are bringing in Thai products, especially anything with a health-related use, check with HSA what applies to your business. We would also suggest keeping your own shelf wording to what the pack says, rather than repeating marketing language from overseas listings.

How DANJJAK fits in

DANJJAK supplies products from Singapore, Japan, Thailand and elsewhere in Asia to businesses here. We buy from brands and their authorised distributors, and we do not sell what we cannot verify. You can read more about how we work on our about page.

The Thai lines we carry range from fabric softener and inhalers to fibre drinks, hair colour and acne gels. Browse the wellness category for the sachet drinks, or ask us about a specific brand.

If there is a Thai product your customers keep asking for, tell us about it through the contact form, with the brand and variant if you know them. We will let you know whether we can supply it, along with pricing and minimum order.
